Convinced she loved Ashley Wilkes, she married Charles Hamiltion just to hurt him for marrying Melanie Hamiltion. Charles died of pneumonia during the war, leaving Scarlett alone with a son - Wade. Determined to get home, she hauled herself, Wade, Melanie, and Melanie's new baby all the way from Atlanta to Tara - only to find that everything had been stolen by the yankees, and her mother was dead from typhoid.
